As the curtain rises, and you hear the choir’s first notes of Claudio Monteverdi’s Baroque masterpiece Vespers, 1610, you will be mesmerized by this new full-length ballet. Renowned choreographer James Kudelka creates a mythology-infused world reminiscent of a gilded Renaissance tapestry, where dancers in larger-than-life masks explore humankind’s relationship with the natural and spiritual worlds. Vespers features the legendary prima ballerina Evelyn Hart, gracefully captivating the audience as Everywoman, a central role created just for her.

Mozart Requiem - OSCN

This year under the direction of Andrew Megill, the orchestra is joined by the OSM Chorus as they perform three cantatas featuring concertante choruses and arias in which voices converse with oboes, horn, and strings. In this selection, Bach’s mastery of word painting, typical of his religious works, is vividly demonstrated.

SMAM and Ensemble Caprice: Bach's Christmas Oratorio

Sunday december 3rd, 2016 at 3 p.m.

Mont-Royal Metro

SUMMARY

Bach’s serialized version of the Christmas story… in six episodes! The Christmas Oratorio is made up of six cantatas that relate the events surrounding the Nativity. Each part was performed on one of the major feast days of the Christmas period, from the first day of Christmas right through to Epiphany. The brilliance of the trumpets, the exciting choruses and fervent chorales, passionate recitatives, and the contemplative compassion and colourful variety of the arias make the Christmas Oratorio a work of great contrasts, by turns introspective and celebratory.

Originally from Estonia, a former Soviet Union member, Arvo Pärt is without a doubt one of the leading contemporary composers. In his works, which virtually all deal with religious subjects, musical traditions of the Eastern Orthodox, the Roman Catholic and Protestant churches meet and enrich each other. The Saint John Passion is typical of his original but simple compositional technique, thetintinnabuli style, which reminds us of the sound of bells.

This concert celebrates the 100th anniversary of the Oratory Saint-Joseph du Mont-Royal's crypt and its Casavant organ Opus 708.

A message from Douglas Knight, director:

In May 2017 we will perform a “Mozart plus” concert featuring two sacred works by the celebrated composer. The concert will open with his Missa brevis in F, KV 192 written in 1774; this work is of particular interest in his treatment of the Credo. Next on the programme will be his Vesperae solennes de confessore KV 339 written in 1780; this was to be the last choral composition he would write for the Salzburg Cathedral.

The “plus” portion of the concert will be a collection of motets and madrigals by Palestrina, Arcadelt, Passereau et al., as well as contemporary works by such composers as Rutter and Sirett.

SUMMARY

Exactly one century before Bach, three great musicians gave Lutheran music its first significant achievement. Born one and two years apart, and bound by friendship, Heinrich Schütz (1585-1672), Johann Hermann Schein (1586-1630), and Samuel Scheidt (1587-1654) took up both the subtle imagery of the madrigal and the great Venetian polychoral tradition, adapting them to the German language and to the expressive ideals of the Baroque. The suppleness of their counterpoint, the density of their writing technique, the freedom and splendour of their vocal and instrumental blend, and the eloquence of their melodic material would set the starting point for three centuries of German music.

(Choriste-soliste)

Part of the Russian serie presented in Bourgie Hall by the Arte Musica Foundation

The great Russian choral tradition goes back centuries. The fact that the Orthodox Church had forbidden the use of instruments in liturgical music allowed a magnificent repertoire of religious music for a cappella choir to build up over time. Compellingly original, and by turns hieratic and virtuosic, it made the Slavonic language a vehicle for intense spirituality. With the rise of the Romanovs in the 17th century came a European influence, with composers adopting polyphony and the concertanto style, while managing to keep with tradition, uniting “popular Russian song and good old Western fugue,” in the words of Glinka.
