Originally from Estonia, a former Soviet Union member, Arvo Pärt is without a doubt one of the leading contemporary composers. In his works, which virtually all deal with religious subjects, musical traditions of the Eastern Orthodox, the Roman Catholic and Protestant churches meet and enrich each other. The Saint John Passion is typical of his original but simple compositional technique, thetintinnabuli style, which reminds us of the sound of bells.
This concert celebrates the 100th anniversary of the Oratory Saint-Joseph du Mont-Royal's crypt and its Casavant organ Opus 708.
